Chapter 8 A New Volunteer

The front door opened before Tamar got to it. “You’re late. I was about to call to find out what the problem was.”

“Sorry, Dad. New volunteer and traffic.”

“Okay, well, go help your sister and mother in the kitchen.”

Tamar dropped her bag and went to help, however everything was on the table already.

“Good, you’re here. How were things at Playful Paws?”

“All good. Two new strays, but two others were adopted out. I had to update the website again.”

“Your sister mentioned it was Deidre Rothstein who gave you a ride home.” Ron’s tone was neutral but his mouth was set like he was clenching his teeth.

“That’s right. She’s going to volunteer.” Tamar smiled. “She was a natural with the dogs and I think she enjoyed it.”

Ron grunted and Marie turned to him. “Ron, is something wrong?”

“No, no. Nothing’s wrong. Hannah, anything important happen at school today?”

Hannah glanced at Tamar before answering her father. “Not really. Some talk about the dance coming up next month – no one has come up with a theme yet. And then spring break ideas. Do we have any plans for spring break?”

Ron sat up and his mouth opened, but nothing came out at first. “I… I don’t think we’ve given spring break any thought yet. Dances, spring break? What about your classes?”

Tamar coughed to suppress a laugh. Hannah stared at him. “Dad, my classes are fine. No problem. Same old, same old. Under control. But Matt asked about spring break. Are we going to visit Gramps and Grands?”

Ron leaned back and looked to Marie for help, speechless.

“Well, of course everything is under control, Hannah. We always like to know if something came up with your classes or teachers though. Obviously, not.” Marie looked at Ron. “And we probably should make some decision about spring break. It occurred to me this may be the last time we do spring break together as a family. Next year, the girls may have different schedules, Ron.”

Silence followed with everyone focused on their food. Finally, Ron cleared his throat. “What do you girls want to do? Have you given thought to any place other than Vermont?”

The sisters exchanged glances. “Uh, no. Other than the one year we went to Disney, we always go to Vermont.” Tamar shrugged.

“That’s an option for sure. We’ll see. I guess things will change with you at college Hannah.” He sighed. “Tamar, how did your day go?”

“Other than the dog checking everybody for security, nothing new. Another quiz in World History and we were back in our classrooms. Mr. Hanrahan wouldn’t talk about what happened. We’re reading a great book in English lit – “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee – have you read it, Dad?”

“Of course. Excellent book. Hannah, didn’t your class read it last year?”

“Nope.”

“Why not? Has curriculum changed in just one year?” Marie asked.

“The required reading selections stay the same, but the teachers choose the additional books from a list of approved reads. If it’s that good, I’ll add it to my To-Be-Read list.
